Q. I have a very sensitive scalp. Is it still possible for me to color my hair without causing some kind of reaction? Tracey Croswell; Charlottesville, VA

A. Yes, coloring is possible, but it’s best to do a skin test before undergoing any sort of chemical process to make sure you won’t have an allergic reaction. Ask your stylist to do this for you. It’s quick and easy. If it’s determined that you aren’t allergic but, as you suspect, are just very easily irritated, I recommend having color applied in foils, since that method is performed without the color chemicals coming into contact with your scalp. The result: Lots of beautiful highlights and/or lowlights with no irritated skin to ruin the experience.
