Q. My hair is getting gray. I’m thinking about adding lowlights and would like to know about this; especially the frequency of touch-ups. Jo Ann Herron; Tampa, FL
A. Camouflaging your gray with lowlights keeps your maintenance pretty low, especially versus all over color. I would suggest a salon visit around every eight weeks, which will help keep your hair color budget on the low side as well. Quick tip: To avoid the ‘streaked’ look, try a shade of lowlight just slightly lighter than the darkest part of your hair. The color will look more natural, and thatprocess will give you a multidimensional effect.

I am getting concerned on coloring my hair,I am graying and have been doing self home color, and the gray is becoming more and more challenging,I have dark brown hair and my family doesn’t want me to go gray, but my hair is thinning a lot and I have had very thick hair over the years,I am 58 yrs. of age,and seriously have been contemplating coloring my hair the color of Paula Deens hair. But I know that would be a dramatic change I go on the 13th to get my hair colored so I would appreciate it if you could let me know what your advice would be.Thank You Ksthy

Kathy – I have medium brown hair. Try Organic Color Systems natural hair color. Fairly new to the US. Only available at select salons. Google it and use the salon finder. Stay to your natural color or a shade darker for longer lasting grey coverage. Ion is also good, not chemical free, but very gentle. I’ve had dark brwon Ion color and carmel highlights done at JC Penny Salons. At home in between salon visits I use Garnier Nutrisse semi permenant dye in a shade darker than my color as I find going a shade lighter does not last on those resistant greys along the hairline! Good Luck.
