Q. How do you work with a cowlick or widow’s peak right in the center of the hairline on your forehead? It’s really hard to get my hair to style right since the cowlick always causes my hair to pop up. Karen Bignell; Athens, GA
A. When it comes to cowlicks, the old saying “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” holds true. The best way to defeat a cowlick is to pick a style that actually works with your hair’s idiosyncratic curve pattern. If you absolutely can’t deal with a permanent center part, try blow drying the front of your hair first, in a downward motion, from side-to-side. Adding a little blow dry balm, like Redken power tame 16, to damp hair prior to styling will also help control potential pop-up issues.

I have a double crown cowlick. The one on the right side of my crown is super bad. Its 3 inches long and it parts, half to the left and half to the right. And swirls down. Its three inches long, and i feel like it a bald spot! My hair is already super fine, so when i try to back come it or tease it, looks like i have birds nest. I can blow dry it straight, but then it goes back. I’ve used mousse, hair sprays, hair cement and nothing. I cant even wear my extensions because you can see the weft from it. My hair is usually half pinned up or in a ponytail, i want to wear it down. Curling and scrunching does not help.
