Ashley Greene: Pretty as a Picture

October 3rd, 2011

Just in time for the holidays: Ashley Greene’s stylists share how the Twilight star stays picture perfect in front of the camera.

Smile! Between Thanksgiving get-togethers, holiday fêtes and New Year’s Eve, we’re betting you’ll be the subject of dozens of party pics. Want to look as good as perennially photogenic Ashley Greene does? We asked her beauty pros, hairstylist Ted Gibson and makeup artist Mai Quynh, to share the star’s red carpet secrets.

Greene’s Signature Style
As Alice in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn–Part 1, in theaters November 18, Greene wears pale makeup and a choppy bob. Offscreen, “her look is girl-next-door approachable, not contrived,” says Gibson, who keeps Greene’s auburn locks touchable and soft. To play up her green, almond-shaped eyes, Quynh uses liquid liner on the top lid and softens it with a layer of powder liner on top

Sculpt Your Face
The light from a flash can make anyone’s face look wide and flat. Gibson (who owns salons in New York and Florida and also appears on TLC’s What Not to Wear) sometimes styles Greene’s bangs so they fall over the sides of her face, visually slimming it. For makeup, Quynh keeps Greene’s strong bone structure from fading away by dusting her nose and cheekbones with a shimmery peach highlighter. Quynh creates the appearance of fuller lips by applying gloss to only the center of the lips.

Create Perfect Skin
A gorgeous complexion is a must in photographs, which can exaggerate even the most minor flaws. To perfect Greene’s pretty skin, Quynh, a celebrity makeup artist for Mark Cosmetics, brushes on foundation, then blends with a damp sponge. If your lips are chapped, do what Quynh does to Greene: Before she slicks on lipstick, “I apply lip balm and gently brush her lips back and forth with a clean mascara wand to remove dry skin.” A dry toothbrush works too.

Primp at the Party
Keep your late-night photos looking as good as the ones early on with a mid-event touch-up. If your hair is flat, fluff it up with the ladies’ room hand dryer. “Point the nozzle up, give your hair a blast of heat and massage it at the roots,” Gibson says. If it’s getting frizzy, do as Greene does and tuck a Ted Gibson Hair Sheet into your evening bag. “Add a little bit more sparkle and smooth frizz,” says Gibson, by running the silicone-coated fabric over your strands. Then get back out there!

1. Strike a Pose
“After Ashley gets dressed, her next order of business is figuring out how she’ll pose in the outfit she’s chosen,” says Gibson. Try this classic Greene stance at your next big event: Extend your right arm close to your body without touching it (that can make your bicep look flabby); place your left hand on your hip to carve out your waist; and plant your right foot in front of the left and point your right toe toward the camera.

2. Get Glowing
If the skin on your arms or legs is dry, it’ll show up chalky and dull in pictures. Quynh keeps Greene’s limbs looking beautiful by smoothing on a shimmery body lotion. Got bony or lumpy knees? “Sometimes I dab foundation on uneven-looking knees, which makes legs look more attractive in short dresses,” Quynh adds.

3. Sit Prettier
The camera can add pounds, especially when you’re sitting down. Crossing your legs at the knee can make them look twice as wide, so cross them at the ankle or angle your calves to the side.
