You love your shoulder-length (or longer) hair, but you’re bored of wearing it down or putting it in a ponytail. Keep the length and multiply your style options with layers!

SEXY VOLUME
Regis Artistic Director Kat Carey first gave model Ariana a great new cut. To create this first look—full and swingy, with a side part and sideswept bangs—Carey conditioned hair from ear-level to ends with It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product. Then she sprayed one small section at a time with Regis DESIGNLINE Get It Pumped Thickening Spray and blew hair dry, styling ends under with a round brush. Finally, Carey added extra volume by working in Regis DESIGNLINE Powder Boost Volumizer at the roots and teasing hair.
BOHEMIAN WAVES
Style number two: A center part and waves. Carey created Ariana’s curls with one small section of dry hair at a time. She sprayed each inch-wide section with Redken Hot Sets 22 Thermal Setting Mist, then twirled it with her fingers into a “rope.” She ran each twirled section through—surprise!—a flat iron, flipping the iron once to form a loose wave about midway down. (Learn this technique at thehairbookonline.com.) Unlike a curling iron’s results, Carey said, “each curl will be a little bit different.”
SLEEK & SMOOTH
Ariana almost looks like a different person in this side-parted, pin-straight style. Achieving it was a breeze: Having already prepped Ariana’s hair with thermal protectant, Carey combed out the bohemian curls and used the same Regis DESIGNLINE Flat Iron to re-straighten her hair, one-inch section by one-inch section.

The Cut
“Long hair can be style-less,” says Carey, who took Ariana’s grown-out, shapeless tresses from drab to fab by trimming about three inches off the bottom and adding long layers all over. Layers, Carey says, flatter almost everyone. Depending on where they’re placed, they can play up your best features, like big eyes or high cheekbones, and downplay the ones you don’t love, like a large nose or a broad forehead. Layers give flat, heavy hair movement and bounce and open up a whole new world of styling possibilities. The best part? “You can still put your hair in a ponytail!” Carey says.
“The goal was to make Ariana’s hair more versatile.”
The Color
To create a rich winter blond, Carey colored Ariana’s hair a light golden brown, warming up her existing highlights with a honey hue. She also mixed in lowlights for depth.
