Road Trip: Penn Badgley, Usher and Adam Levine

June 26th, 2012

Look sharp and stay comfortable, even when you’re traveling.

Hitting the road this summer?  Skip the baseball cap and sweatpants, and travel like a man.  No matter where you’re going or how you’re getting there, these celebrity-inspired looks are as comfortable as they are cool.

Penn Badgley

HAIR

The Gossip Girl actor’s lothario curls are lower maintenance than you’d think. The secret is in the cut, which leaves hair much longer on the top than on the sides. “Keeping curly hair on the long side helps tame it,” says Regis Artistic Director Terry Varty. “You need enough weight to flatten it out so it doesn’t get too big.” To style, wash your hair, let it fall at its natural part and hold it in place with a dab of grooming cream (American Crew Forming Cream, $16.95, Regis Salons).

CLOTHES

A comfortable no-brainer, the tee is already probably your travel shirt of choice. Badgley’s scores style points because it’s free of slogans, sayings and logos, not to mention rips and holes. The fit is also spot-on: not too tight, not too loose (tee, $9.95, H&M stores).

Usher

HAIR

We can’t guarantee you this R&B star’s swagger, but you can have his look. Your stylist will use clippers to closely crop the sides of your hair, and scissors to shape the top. “Your stylist can change your hair to complement your face,” Varty says. “If your face is square, your hair should be rounder. If your face is more rounded, he can square your haircut off and give you a leaner look.” Polish up the cut with a low-sheen finishing wax (TIGI Catwalk Session Series True Wax, $19.95, Regis Salons).

CLOTHES
Simple monochromatic pieces let Usher’s accessories take center stage. A leather carry-on will look better the more banged- up it gets, and bright sneakers are stylishly comfortable. A plus: velcro fasteners mean easy on and off in the airport security line (duffle, $298, bananarepublic.com).

Adam Levine

HAIR
The Maroon 5 singer’s on-trend cut is easy to customize. The hair on top is consistently three to four inches long and pushed back from the forehead (a sculpting clay will hold it). Levine wears it shaved on the sides. But tread carefully, Varty says: “Guys with thicker, denser hair can get away with more scalp exposure than guys with thinner hair.” If you’re more conservative, leave the sides about a quarter-inch long and blend with the top hair (Regis DESIGNLINE Sculpting Mud, $9.95, Regis Salons).

CLOTHES
A light-wash denim jacket is handy for cool summer nights. Go for a slim fit, and never button it. Red alert: denim on denim is acceptable only if you are a rock star. You are not, so pair your jack with chinos or shorts, not jeans (jacket, $90, topman.com).
