Neil Patrick Harris, Paul Rudd and More: The Cuts of Comedy

January 1st, 2012

Take it from these five funnymen: The first rule of style is to never take yourself too seriously. The second is to always look seriously good. Regis Artistic Director Terry Varty tells you how to get each look.

Neil Patrick Harris

Don’t like the freshly cut Boy Scout look? Neither does the How I Met Your Mother star, who for years has sported a style that’s short but not overly groomed. Varty describes the cut as “rougher” than a standard short cut, “especially over the ears, with a broken edge.” To achieve similar results, your stylist may use a razor after cutting to make hair a little choppier. Let hair air dry, and rake a few shakes of Regis DESIGNLINE Powder Boost Volumizer through it—from roots to tips—for a matte, tousled finish.

Jason Sudeikis

STYLE TIP: The old-school pompadour is having a new moment.

The Saturday Night Live player’s on-point pompadour “is the latest in men’s hair,” Varty says. It’s short on the sides and much longer on top and has a purposely imperfect trim around the ears. Styling depends on your hair type. If you’ve got thick hair, Varty says, work a small amount of American Crew Classic Firm Hold Styling Gel through wet hair, comb into place (following your natural part), and let air dry. If it’s fine or thin, blow dry, using a round brush to curve it back and off your face. Then use a dab of Regis DESIGNLINE Interrupt Texturizing Clay to keep your pomp in place.

Donald Glover

Exhausted just reading about Sudeikis’s pompadour? Then swipe Community star Glover’s meticulously sculpted short style, which looks great with very little maintenance. “It depends on your stylist; some can do this cut freehand, some with a clipper and guard,” Varty says. To style, simply let hair air dry. If you want to add a little shine, a tiny bit of Redken Water Wax 03 Shine Defining Pomade will polish up the look.

Jesse Eisenberg

The star of comedies like Adventureland expertly demonstrates how to wear natural curls. Eisenberg’s longish cut is layered about halfway to the ear. Styling is a cinch: “It’s wash-and-wear, so you don’t spend a lot of time on it,” Varty says. American Crew Classic 3-in-1 Shampoo, Conditioner and Body Wash does the job: lather, rinse, air dry and go.

Paul Rudd

Film’s reigning king of comedy (Our Idiot Brother, Knocked Up, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Anchorman…we could go on) recently grew out his hair. His cut is similar to Eisenberg’s, Varty says, but the key is styling it in waves, away from the face. Apply Regis DESIGNLINE Texture Cream to damp hair to control the look and keep it in shape.
