Under the Helmet, Tom Brady Keeps It Sporty

October 18th, 2010

Away from the football field, these NFL stars score points for their expert grooming skills.

Get great hair like theirs with tips from our team of pro stylists!

Suave Sophistication

Tom Brady
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has a slicked-back style that’s easy to copy. Grow out your hair for a few months and then ask your stylist to add lots of layers. Use your fingers to comb a dime-size drop of TIGI Bed Head Power Trip Hair Gel from roots to ends. To distribute the gel evenly so hair doesn’t fall flat, “keep your fingers open, not closed,” says TIGI Creative Director at Large DJ Riggs.

Manly Mane

Troy Polamalu

For controlled curls like the Pittsburgh Steelers strong safety’s, start with a long, layered cut. “Curly hair tends to puff out and look triangular, so ask your stylist to thin out the ends,” advises Redken for Men Consultant Jenny Balding. After that, a leave-in conditioner is your best frizz-fighting weapon. Comb a blend of American Crew Stimulating Conditioner and Redken Curl Wise 14 Curl Defining Cream through damp strands. Then let hair dry naturally, without touching it, so curls stay defined.

Super-Sporty

Tony Romo

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback rocks a modern version of the classic Caesar cut. American Crew Artistic Director Paul Wilson calls it “the quintessential no-fuss athlete haircut—easy to control and perfect for going from the gridiron to a night out on the town.” Ask for a cut that’s short on the sides and back but a little longer and texturized on top. When styling, your hair shouldn’t look too groomed. Create a “separated” look by applying American Crew Forming Cream to dry hair.

Casual Cool

Mark Sanchez
The New York Jets quarterback sports a style “great for the guy who has a bit of natural wave and likes to wait between cuts,” says Janine Jarman of the Sebastian Professional Stylist Design Team. You’ll want a slightly textured cut that looks a little grown-out—hair should be finger-length. To style, rub a dab of Sebastian Microweb Fiber between your palms and then work the product through your hair, separating small sections and twisting them between your thumb and index finger.
