Your Hair Is Thirsty

January 2nd, 2012

Bring it back to life with products that moisturize and repair.

Cold weather wreaks havoc on hair. It’s frigid outside and hot inside, and there’s very little humidity anywhere. That combination takes its toll, zapping moisture and leaving frizz and static in its place. The keys to surviving the rest of the season: Condition properly, and choose styling products that lock in moisture or add even more.

To restore shine and protect your color, start with a shampoo made to hydrate hair. Then use a daily conditioner—a must for everyone in cold weather. (If your hair is fine or oily, condition only from the ears down.) If you need extra hydration, towel dry your hair and layer on a lightweight leave-in conditioner. For the most intense, longest-lasting treatment, a hair mask is the Godzilla of conditioners. Once a week, apply the mask to damp hair, let it sit for five to 10 minutes, and rinse and style as usual with a moisturizing styling cream.

In no time your hair will have its brilliant summer swagger back, even in the middle of the worst winter weather.

Stylist Tip

To make sure your hair absorbs conditioner, Regis Artistic Director Renee Herskovitz suggests this: Towel dry hair first, then condition and rinse as usual.
