Redken’s creative consultant, Guido Palau, kicked off the European leg of the fall fashion shows with two very different takes on an updo.

The McQ collection was inspired by Land Girls (a British TV period drama), 40s military and London during war times. “The hairstyle was meant to be strong, forceful and structured. It reaches back into the brand’s heritage, referencing its own aesthetic of beauty,” said Guido of the at once retro and futuristic updos he created for the show by wrapping blow dried strands (prepped with full frame 07 protective volumizing mousse for fullness) around a large, donut-shaped pad atop the head. He completed the style with two hairsprays—fashion work 12 versatile working spray and forceful 23 super strength finishing spray—for lasting hold and lacquered finish.

“Even though Ferretti is a very romantic designer, she wanted something a little stronger than normal,” said Guido of the sharp, sleek and shiny chignons he whipped up to compliment the more masculine and architectural elements of the collection. To achieve the style, Guido began by applying Body Full Volume Amplifier throughout damp hair to add thickness and blew it dry straight. Next, he created a clean center part and pulled the hair into a low ponytail. He layered on shine flash 02 glistening mist and fashion work 12 versatile working spray for shine and hold before raking his fingers through the hair for fullness and twisting and fastening the hair into a small chignon at the nape of the neck. He then layered on additional shine flash 02 and fashion work 12 for a sleek and fly-away free look. “It’s a severe look but has a very glamorous, seductive feel to it,” said the stylist of the finished updo.
