When choosing a hairstyle, the most important rule to remember is that not every style works for everyone. Why is this? It’s all about face shape!  So, in order to help you uncover what style works best on you, we’re dedicating the next four Fridays to face shapes!

First up: The square face. A square face is defined by a broad forehead and strong jaw that’s almost as long as it is wide. With a square face, the goal should be to counter angular and hard edges with soft fluid layers and flowing edges. Avoid a blunt cut or blunt bangs, as they’ll add harshness to your face. Instead, opt for sweeping side bangs that cover and soften your forehead. Long layers and texture, like curls or waves, also work well because they create softness against prominent features.

To the left, Angelina Jolie’s curled layers begin at her jawline and soften her face. The volume at the top of her head also creates curved edges that counter harsh angles. Olivia Wilde’s cut is another style that works extremely well for a square-shaped face. The middle part balances out either side of her forehead, while the long waves soften her jawline and lengthen her face. A tight ponytail or updo is usually not the way to go with a square face. However, Keira Knightley’s loose, messy updo works perfectly on her. Her hair is twisted slightly at her forehead and the loose tendrils around her face make her features more delicate. The headpiece also adds a bit of femininity, as well.
