In an usual departure from the norm, designer Donatella Versace opted for models hair to be wound into a sleek bun for her Spring 2011 show instead of the big glamazon style that is her brand’s signature.
“Donatella and I discussed this look quite a bit as typically she loves big, voluminous, sexy hair for her show,” said stylist and Redken Creative Consultant, Guido Palau. “We wanted to show that hair kept close to the head, that draws attention to the face, can be just as high glamour as big hair.”
To create the look, Palau combed Redken hardwear 16 super strong gel through sections of hair to just past the nape of the neck. Next, he smoothed the hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck, coiled the hair around itself into a knot and pinned it into place. He covered the bun with a square of PVC plastic and secured it with an elastic band, allowing the ends to stick out. He finished by slicking the exposed hair with glass 01 smoothing serum for a glassy, patent leather texture. For a more “real world” effect, Palau suggests using less product and swapping the PVC for another fabric.
Said the stylist of the final effect, “This is a look anyone can wear, as long as she has the confidence to allow her face the extra exposure.”
