askastylist_suzannesawyerQ. I’m seven months pregnant and I desperately need to dye my hair! I’d like to keep it a dark brown, but I can’t do an all over color due to the ammonia in the hair dye. Are there any other options for me? Cassie Pettit; St. Charles, MO

A. According to Teca Gillespie, Proctor & Gamble Beauty Scientist, “if a woman normally colors her hair, there is no scientifically established reason for her to stop doing so during pregnancy.” That said, if you’re in doubt, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor to get his/her opinion. If there’s still some concern, consider a demi-permanent hair color, like Wella Professional Color Touch. Demi-permanents can deepen color while adding tone and shine—all without ammonia. Another option is to ask your stylist to apply your regular color in foils (like highlights). Since foils keep the color off the scalp, you can pretty much use whatever type of color you want or need to achieve your hair color goals—safely!
