Q. What haircuts go great with super curly hair? Wendy Rodas; North Hollywood, CA
A. If you’re wearing your coils in a curly style on a regular basis, then I recommend choosing a cut based on the shape of your face. For round, it’s best to keep cut the curls right below the chin with layers cut in so there is volume on top, not around your face (FYI, this is a great slimming trick). If you have a long face shape, take a cue from actress Sarah Jessica Parker. Most of her cuts over the past few years are cut full through the sides and layered all different lengths to add fullness around her face. Lastly, if you like to switch between curly and straight styles, choose a cut that translates well both ways. Long layers work great because the weight of the hair keeps curls in control and the longer pieces fall beautifully when blown-out!

Hi. I’m 20, 5’3″ and trying to grow my really thick, curly, and frizzy hair out. My initial thought process revolved around ‘if it’s long, it’ll be weighted and the curl will straighten’. this has YET to work. I am getting married in October, so I am scared to go drastic, but this heavy, one length thing is beginning to kill me..and I hate never being confident wearing it down b/c of all the frizz. The other question, b/c of the trickiness of my hair, is coloring it ever a good idea?
Meaghan, you’re right in assuming ‘the longer, the more weight, the stretchier’. But, having super curly, thick hair myself, I can totally relate. Here’s a great option, though; Anti-curl is a chemical process that smooths, elongates or can even straighten your curl and make it more manageable. The product itself can do any of these three options. I’ve seen it work miracles on men and women of many different ethnicities, so no matter how massive the curl it will tame it.
First, find a stylist in your area at Google “your city, anti-curl specialist” (by the way, all Regis salons carry the product, but if there’s not one in your area then you’ll have better luck at the google search). Next, interview your stylist face-to-face and ask them to show you pictures of the end result, for your personal assurance. Once you receive the service it’s “bye-bye frizzies”!
P.S. You’ll be able to pull of a more layered look too, with the help of the anti-curl which should aid in solving your one length bob problemo.
I have naturally curly hair that’s very thick. It seems that the only options for a style are all one length long or all one length short. Currently, it’s just past my shoulders but it’s so thick that the only way I can wear it is in a pony tail or with the front pulled back (where my bangs would be) and pinned on top of my head. I have an oval face, I’m not heavy but can tend to have somewhat of a double chin. I have yet to find a shorter cut that looks good on me. What do you recommend? I’ve searched online and the only “curly” styles are obviously NOT naturally curly, or their ethnic.
