askastylist_marlenaisbell1Q. I have dandruff and I want a good shampoo or a special treatment to use for this condition. Debbie Mireles; Laredo, TX

A. Dandruff is usually caused by an over production of oil from the scalp, yeast (which your body produces) and dead skin cells that form patchy and sometimes itchy flakes. There are a couple different treatments for this issue. The one I recommend most is a shampoo containing a combination of salicylic acid (to remove the dead skin) and zinc pyrithione (an anti-fungal ingredient). Nioxin Scalp Recovery Medicating Cleanser is safe for color-treated hair—which may explain why it’s a client favorite. Use it at least twice a week, switching off between it and your regular shampoo.

Each week we dedicate space to answering YOUR burning hair questions. Need some advice? Confused about a service or style? From cuts and color to tools and techniques, our experts are available to weigh in on all things hair-related. To submit a Q, send it here: questions@thehairbookonline.com
