askastylist_marlenaisbellQ. I have been coloring my hair “soft black” for six months. I hate it but am afraid to throw anything else on it. I would like to go back to the blonde I was before. What can be done, if anything? Anonymous

A. This is a process the professionals call “color correction”. Although there are color remover kits sold to the general public, I don’t recommend trying this at home. Leave this job to a well -trained stylist who can give you the best advice possible when it comes to the health of your hair.

Removing a color as dark as black begins with a lightening process that usually involves hair bleach. Generally, dark colors can be lightened, in one day, to a medium to light brown. A second bleach process can be performed the same day, but only if the integrity of your hair (ie: its health) has not been compromised. Otherwise, your stylist will have you return to the salon in two to four weeks for a haircut and another lightening process. This entire service can be very pricey, so definitely sit down with your stylist to discuss the best options for your future hair color.
