Q. I would really appreciate a step by step guide on how to grow out short hair. Sure, there are articles online, but they all say to wear scarves and hats and hair clips. I just want a series of cute cuts that will look good as they grow out. Can you suggest some?
A. As a woman who’s also had to go through this tough phase, I can tell you the best style to start with is usually a Classic Bob. That said, if your cut is a short pixie style, start by growing out your top layers while continuing to have your nape area trimmed every three weeks. This way you can work your cut into an angular bob shape—a la Victoria Beckham. Over the next couple of months, experiment with flipped up texture and/or large curls. Even though some of these styles may take more maintenance than you’re used to, I can say from experience it’s more fun (and stylish) than wearing a scarf or hat

Thanks! Now I know. I just got my hair cut really short and was worried about being able to regrow it long without looking like I just got a bad haircut.
Whenever I try to grow my hair out after having it short, it seems that no matter what stylist I go to for that in-between stage trim they always cut a lot off and I’m back at where I started. What’s the best way to communicate with my stylist w/o causing hard feelings?
Wendy, I feel the same way! I go in after so long just to get a trim and I leave feeling like it is shorter and back where i started. I feel very close with my stylist, and not sure how to fix this.
Wendy & Forrest, sometimes stylist forget to perform a thourough consultation with their long-term clientelle and assume that they want the ‘usual’. My best suggestion is for you to voice your concerns with your stylist and together, set clear, long term goals for your desired results.
