Q. How can I keep my highlights looking bright and healthy looking? Also, the sun makes them whiter. Is there any way to prevent this besides wearing a hat? Angela Wallace; North Redington Beach, FL
A. A hat can be a great look, but you may not want to make it your go-to hair-protecting staple, especially if you’re investing in fabulous color. The best way to keep hair healthy (and hold on to expensive color) is by treating it right. Winter weather, low humidity and indoor heat can rob hair of moisture, while highlighting services break down hair protein. Since healthy hair receives color better and retains it longer, regular in-salon treatments—moisturizing if your hair is dry, a protein treatment if color is fading or a combo service if both are a concern—can help. Treatments usually range from $10-25 and should be performed weekly if your hair is in a compromised state and monthly or bi-monthly to maintain a healthy hair state.
As for keeping streaks bright, ask your stylist to highlight with color instead of lightener (it’s less harsh on hair) or use a combination of color and lightener. If you are now in a place where your overall look is too light, ask your stylist to tone it down while boosting shine with a no-ammonia, deposit only hair color or a demi-color. Another good idea is to look for styling products and leave-in conditioners with built-in UV protection. A few to try: PureOlogy Styling Lotion, Redken Color Extend Sun Sparkling Shield Leave-In Smoother and Biolage Sunsorials Protective Sun Gel.
