Q. How do you get your hair back to its natural color once it’s dyed? Whitney Smith; Santa Barbara, CA

Α. Returning hair to its natural color is something that can be easily accomplished by your stylist.
If you’re more than two or three shades lighter than natural your stylist will have to first fill in the paler hair (a process similar the priming a white wall in order to paint it brown without covering it in many expensive layers of color) before adding on a shade that’s as close as possible to your natural hue.
If your hair is darker than natural, your stylist will need to strip out the artificial pigment then recolor your hair a shade more similar to what would naturally grow out of your head.
While a stylist can get really close to your original color, the only way to get it 100% “natural” is to grow it out. Considering that man-made color delivers better shine, dimension and texture than uncolored hair, you should make sure to this is what you really want.
