Sometimes you just need a haircut—fast. Job interview, wedding, traffic school summons, whatever, you walk in without an appointment. Here are some tips for achieving “regular” status even if it’s the first time you’ve stepped foot in a particular salon.
1. Be nice and accommodating. The salon’s staff and stylists are going out of their way to make room for you at a moment’s notice.
2. Do some research. It’s fine to drop in, but even better for you if the salon you walk into has a great reputation.
3. Come prepared. Even the most spontaneous walk-in should have some magazine clips of desired hairstyles on hand.
4. Don’t be too critical. Certain nuances in style—bangs that skim the brows as opposed to the lashes and cowlicks that fall one way or another—are mastered over time not necessarily at the first visit.
5. Show your appreciation. A smile, some heartfelt thanks and a tip for immediate service will go a long way in making everyone feel good about your dropping in unannounced.
(True story: My girlfriend was a walk-in and she’s been my client for seven years. Talk about the start of a beautiful relationship!)
